Boyd Grain Farms

A Master Farmer article in 1990 said, “If you treat employees with respect and fairness, they’ll always be there when you really need their help.  That common-sense approach has served Tom Boyd well in his relationship with 25 employees who work for him in his multi-faceted operation.”  At the time, Tom was 40 years old and farmed 2,300 acres, bought and sold about 5 million bushels of grain per year, and operated a fleet of 15 tractor-trailers.

He, along with the next generation, now employ closer to 150 people, farm over 10,000 acres, and run about 100 trucks.  Interestingly enough, the 1990 article states that his average yields per acre the previous 3 years were 160 bushels for field corn.  The Boyds currently have been averaging around 230 bushels.

Tom began farming in partnership with his father Bob and brother Steve in 1968.  In 1978 Bob retired and withdrew from the partnership, at which time Tom and Steve divided the farming operation into 2 businesses.  Trent was just 15 years old when Tom was named Master Farmer by the Indiana Prairie Farmer magazine.  Trent's passion and love for farming is as evident as his father’s.  Trent now leads the way for yet another generation getting ready to come on the scene.
